What are 6 things God wants us to do?
This question often comes up as we are searching for what is it that God wants from us. If we want the truth, we must start with the Bible. It is the Bible that leads us to God’s truth and not man’s truth. (which is merely opinion)
Why can we trust the Bible as God’s word and a way to know truth and righteousness?
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16)
The last few words in the verse lead us to our answer from God. His Scripture is given - “for instruction in righteousness”. So, what is righteousness? Righteousness is doing the will of God. We trust and obey God and seek to do His will. That is why you are here… searching for the answers to ‘What is it that God wants me to do?’ King David in the Old Testament asked the same question.
“Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.” (Psalm 143:10)
The better question then to ask is, ‘What is the Will of God’, so I can focus on what God’s will is for my life.
The 6 things God reveals about His will for us in the Bible are below. These are different than commandments. His will is what He wants from our life, His commandments are rules that lead you away from wickedness and a disobedient life.
1.) God’s will is that you be submissive. (James 4:7)
2.) God’s will is that you be saved, and come to the knowledge of The Truth. (John 3:16)
3.) God’s will is that you be Spirit filled. (Ephesians 5:17-18)
4.) God’s will is that you be sanctified. (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
5.) God’s will is that you suffer for doing good. (1 Peter 3:17)
6.) God’s will is that you be thankful. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Now, let me summarize these things to help you remember God’s will for your life. The Bible is broke into two parts of one story. Man was created and placed into a perfect world. (The Garden of Eden) Man chose his own way and disobeyed God. God punished him by separating man from God since man chose disobedience and doing his own will, not God’s will.
We are all born into an imperfect world, separated from God. We have a choice. We continue to live by our own will, doing what we think to be right, or we turn back to God, repent for our selfishness and sin and seek to do the will of God. The second part of the Bible, God made a way for a man to return to God.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Looking back over what God wants from above, He wants us to submit to Him as our Lord and Savior. If we genuinely and authentically lay down our worldly life and desires and submit to His Son in deep confession and conviction, God desires to save us, fill us with His Spirit, sanctifying us for His Glory. We will be transformed by God, desiring the things of God and we will at times suffer doing the things God commands, because the world that does not follow God makes fun, talks down and tries to belittle those who live their lives for God. And finally, us being filled with His Spirit, knowing His Spirit is in us, we cannot help to be thankful in all things, giving Glory to our Lord everyday.
