God lifts up those who humble themselves

In the Bible, God gives wisdom and understanding.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (James 4:10)

Before we tackle humbleness, let’s read that again. What is “in the sight of the Lord?” Everything in the world and heaven including your heart, is in the sight of the Lord. He sees all. He knows all.

So, if we are to humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord, we are humbling ourselves in all things and in every manner. Luckily, God created us to be led by our hearts first, then our minds. Therefore the only way to humble oneself is to humble your life beginning with your heart. But how can someone humble their own heart?

Know that we cannot humble our own hearts, it is a direct work of God. It is God that cleans our heart of pride, and God does this through us submitting to Him by placing our trust and faith in Jesus Christ.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

and

“and (God) made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” (Acts 15:9)

In order to humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, you must let go of pride and trust God to lift you up. We are directed by pride although we present ourselves as humble. God knows your heart. You cannot hide anything from Him!

Often we can become self deceived and assume we are humble. The best test to humbleness is to evaluate if we are living with pride. Since pride is the opposite of humbleness, it may be more revealing to look at our pride.

I once read that Pride is the worst sin! This got my attention. How in the world could pride be such a harmful sin? While we are aware of many sins that are terrible and separate us from God, pride rejects God! That means, if you reject God, you have no hope for forgiveness that covers our sins. This is why the enemy loves to promote a life of pride. It is self serving, not God serving.

It is the nature of man to be dominated by Pride! Every human heart is a worshipper of self. Everyone is consumed with themselves. This is yet another form of our fallenness we are born with. Humility of which we desire is foreign to the human heart.

Pride is self serving. It seeks to exalt oneself. Pride desires to be first, it glories in being the best in man’s eye.

In God’s view, humbliness is the virtue of being last. Helping others before helping yourself. It is denying oneself, giving what you have to those that have little.

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed.” -Proverbs 19:17

If we are prideful, we will make an excuse as to why we are keeping what we have. We believe that we are the exception, we are better than others, we worked harder than others, we deserve our things.

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18)

Acting in a way that shows you think you are better, smarter, or more deserving than other people is a haughty spirit.

I get it. It’s hard to confront our own pride. It is even harder to talk about humbleness because our culture and our upbringing is completely against it.

Our world is pride focused. If I were to advertise a seminar on how to be last in this world or how to give to those poorer than you… I doubt I would have a single person sign up.

Although, if I advertised a seminar on how to get rich, gain real estate, influence, fame, followers, or anything else that serves a prideful person, the tickets would sell out.

Pride is a competitive attitude that is conceived in the heart, yet humbleness is kindness, sacrificial to others. It is an attitude of compassion and mercy on others. Jesus demonstrated humility and humiliation through His persucution and His murder by those who were prideful.

Keep in mind that Pride destroys Unity, Pride forfeits Honor, Pride rejects God and Pride creates Exclusivity.

A humble heart desires to put others first and treat others as equals. A humble heart is a serving heart, a caring heart that accepts God and yearns for unity and togetherness. But, a humble heart is only gained through faith in Christ and God giving us a new Spirit. Pray to God to remove your pride and to give you a new Spirit. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God”. - Micah 6:8

Those hearts that reject God and continue on uncleaned and harboring pride, not willing to do His will, are lining up for a destruction that will last spiritually for eternity.

“Not everyone who says to Me(Jesus), ‘Lord, Lord', shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”(Matthew 7:21)

Your physical life will be over before you know it, but your spiritual life that lasts for eternity depends on your decision now. Your eternal life is destined to be tormented for eternity if you do not place your faith in Jesus Christ. God has made a narrow escape for you, but only if you know and trust the way.

“I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father(heaven) except through Me.” -John 14:6

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” -Matthew 7:13&14

We must humble ourselves before God. Seek the truth He has provided for us. Submit to Him as the Lord of your life, repent, ask for forgiveness. Eternity is forever, our physical lives are but a vapor of time in comparison, that soon vanishes away. (James 4:14)
